Effect of Topical Fluoride on Composite Bonding Strength: A Narrative Literature Review

Abstract
Topical fluoride materials are used in dentistry to prevent caries. Composite adhesive resins are commonly used to restore primary and permanent teeth. The interaction between fluoride agents and resin adhesives remains
challenging. Hence, this review explores the effect of fluoride agents on the adhesive bond strength of teeth restored with composite. This paper reviews the effect of sodium fluoride, acidulated phosphate fluoride, titanium
tetrafluoride, stannous fluoride, and silver diamine fluoride and their application methods, timing, and interactions with adhesives. The effect of fluoride agents on bond strength varies based on concentration and acidity. The weakening of the bond occurs through surface precipitation and etching-induced modifications. Fluoride formulations with neutral pH and lower concentration, with timely application, preserve the bond strength.
